P/O. RCAF. Son of Mrs. Bowers and the late Harry Bowers of Wallaceburg, ON. The brother of L/Cpl. Floyd Meritt (KIA 19/12/43). William was born in Wallaceburg and attended the D. A. Gordon public school. He also attended Wallaceburg High School and the Chatham Business College. He was a member of the Dresden championship junior baseball team.  He married Barbara Catherine Racey; the daughter of Mrs. Racey of William St., Chatham and the late Dr. George W. F/O. Bowers was stationed at RCAF Hagerville at the time of his wedding. The WN 6/04/44(P) reported that William had received his wings at Brantford, ON. 24/02/44. After his two weeks leave he left for western Canada where he took an officers’ course for navigation instructors.
