James enlisted in London, ON. He trained at BTC N0. 12 and at Petawawa, ON. in 1941 and spent nearly 3 years in England. He met his cousin William 4 months later while serving in England. James also had a brother Gordon who also served in the same anti-aircraft regiment as his brother.
Served in Canada until September 1941. Went overseas and served for three years. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, Voluntary Service Medal and Defense of Great Britain.
James was serving with a Anti-aircraft battery in the South of England and war confirmed shooting one “Jerry” (German) bomber down. “Apparently, it was a lone raider one of the nuisance variety which came over once in a while during 1941 for I could not see another plane in the sky. Our guns opened fire and we were credited with hitting it. We had plenty of action during the time I was there but that was the only real thrill while in England.” CDN 7/07/44
The welcome home was carried on on at the J. G. Taylor Community Centre with a reception and banquet for James. William Boswell, Pte. Kenneth Milburn and Earl Freeman recently returned.
He was discharged on September 28th, 1944.
