Born on 30/06/1911. The son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bishop (nee Margaret Thomas) of Sydenham St., Dresden, ON. The brother of Albert Earl and Lou.
Orvell enlisted in July of 1942 at HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON. with the RCNVR. John trained at HMCS Cornwallis in Halifax, NS. In January 1944, Orvell was stationed at HMCS Glemora in Halifax, NS.
The CDN 20/05/43 reported that PO. Bishop was home on leave. He departed Chatham for a new station. His wife remained in Chatham. The WN 27/05/43 reported that Oliver has married Miss Huldah (nee Killbride). She would be staying with her mother in Windsor where she has a lucrative position while her husband returned to the coast.
The Wallaceburg News reported that Orvell was home on a 28 day leave with his wife and visited his parents.
In January 1944, Orvell was stationed at HMCS Glemora, Halifax, NS. WN 27/01/44. He served in the North Atlantic, starting as a ordinary Seaman and sailed out of St. John’s Newfoundland. He served as a plumber on the Corvettes, reaching the rank of PO 4th class. He was discharged in September of 1945 with the rank of Petty Officer 4th Class.
He received the Atlantic Star.
After the war, Orvell served as the President of RCL Branch 113 in Dresden, ON. in 1946{(P) Dresden}. He was living at R. R. #3 Chatham, ON.
