Enlisted in 1943 with the Essex Scottish Regt. and later transferring to the Tank Bn. CDN 9/08/45(P)   Prior to the war, he was employed at the Top and Body Co.

The five Bird brothers; Ellwood, Elmer, Harvey, Maurice, and Max had a long connection to wars. Their father, A. W. Bird, was a veteran of the Great War, enlisting in the US Army – Heavy Artillery. His grandfather, J. W. Bird, served in the American Civil War . His great grandfather, J. W. Bird, served in the Spanish American War.

Ellwood volunteered for service in the Pacific. CDN 9/08/45(P)
