Rank | Private |
Service # | A3717 |
Unit # | Royal Canadian Regiment |
Resident | Thamesville ON, Chatham |
Born in Thamesville, ON. The brother of John. His next of kin was reported to be Mrs. Annie Better (his mother) of Wallaceburg, ON.
The CDN reported that he was serving in Italy. Fortunately, he was able to wire flowers to his mother in Canada “despite the heavy fighting at the front“. This indicates that his relationship with his mother was very good.
He was reported to have arrived at Halifax, NS. aboard the S. S. “Nieu Amsterdam” on 9 Sept., 1945. He was expected to arrive at Lachine, PQ on the 11th for his leave to return home. 10,11, 12/09/45. He arrived home 11 Sep. 1945. He was welcomed back to Chatham from overseas duty by Aldermen George Kerr KC., A. G. Goodman, and Bert Joyce. Also by Rehabilitation Officer William Foreman and Alex Copeland for the Civil Reception Committee, along with hundreds of citizens. 12/09/45.
From Janet De Zorzi, granddaughter of George Better who was a veteran. He served in WW2 in the Royal Canadian Unit. He was a resident of Thamesville, ON. George passed away in 2001. He never spoke about the war, so we really never knew his story. I was too young at the time when he was alive to really appreciate what he had sacrificed and went through, only knowing that my mom, his oldest child had never met him until he came home in 1945 when she was 5. My grandpa was always a proud veteran always marching in Remembrance Day ceremonies. I know that he served in Italy. He told us he was just a driver (who whistled at pretty girls) that was his personality, always a jokester.
