Son of Edwin Bell KC. of 30 Roxbourgh St. East, Toronto, ON. Enrolled at Upper Canada College, (U.C.C.) Member of U.C.C. Cadet Corps and 10th Royal Grenadiers. Left U.C.C. in Decemeber of 1909.  Attestation: 22/01/1916 at Toronto, ON. to 123rd Bn. Norman went overseas in August of 1916, served at Vimy Ridge April, 1917. Returned from O.S. duty in December 1917. Served as adjutant of the N.C.O. Training Depot from Feburary to June 1918 at which time he was discharged from the service.

After the war he would be a Broker at the firm of Bell Gouinlock & Co. 69 St. Clair Ave., West, Toronto, ON.
