Prior to the war Ray, his parents, two brothers, and three sisters were living at 136 Queen St., Chatham, ON. Buster attended Queen Mary Public School and he excelled in swimming, baseball, and rugby. He moved on to Chatham Vocational School for one year before starting work at the Ontario Steel Plant in Chatham.

At the age of 17, Ray enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve at Windsor, ON on 29/03/1944. He was a Stoker 2nd Class, and was posted to Nova Scotia. He trained at HMCS Cornwallis, the Navy’s training base in Digby, NS., and then went aboard the H.M.C.S. Buxton (an over aged WWI USN destroyer).

He fell overboard at 23:58 on 28 September from a harbor craft when returning to HMCS Buxton and drowned. His body was never found.

 Age: 18, LAS. Date of Death: 28/09/1944, “Missing presumed dead.”
