Begg John Jack Arthur

 

Jack enlisted with the RCAF in 1940 at Kincardine, ON., at the age of 24. At the time of his enlistment, he was living at R. R. #1 Tiverton. He trained at C-Flight School in Belleville in 1941, Bomber & Gunnery School, and Defoe SK before going overseas where he completed his navigator Training at Graydon, Warwickshire, England. He was then posted to No. 6 Squadron, RCAF – Bomber Command in North Yorkshire. He completed 27 sorties over Germany as a crew- member on a Wellington bomber.

Jack met his wife Vera Maynard (nee Foster) of Selby, Yorkshire while stationed there. Jack and his “war bride” returned to and settled on the family farm near Tiverton. Like many returning service men, he picked up his civilian life by going back to school attaining a Bachelor of Science at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, ON. He went on to get his Masters degree at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON. He accepted a position with the Department of Agriculture as a research scientist and was posted to the entomological laboratory on Park St., in Chatham. He resided in Chatham until his death.

John passed away 19/121965, internment at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, ON. G. Begg (son).
