Veteran of World War One, wounded in France, and lost sight of one eye as result of Shrapnel wound.
Embarked for Halifax 25/03/17 aboard the S.S. Lapland, sailed 28/03/17 Debarked at Liverpool, England 7/04/17. With the 186th Batt., Service in Canada, England, France and Belgium.
Ernest saw service with the *Canadian Machine Gun Company” and it was with that unit that he received a GSW and a ANOPTHALMOS of his Right Eye 15/12/17. During the battle at Passchendaele 15/11/17 It was reported that Ernest was sent to West Cliff Cdn. Eye & Ear Hospital, Folkstone. The shrapnel was removed along with his Right eye.
His right eye was enucleated (removed). Vision in his left eye was 6/9. An artificial right eye had been supplied and it recommended that he be placed in Category B3 for four months. He was sent to Branville, Cdn. Special Hospital 28/12/17
Ernest’s Hospitalization was a journey first to the Casualty Clearing Station at Poperinghe, No. 16 General Hospital, at Le Treeport 19/11/17. Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley 12/12/17. GCSH (General Cdn. Stationary Hospital) at Buxton, England 28/12/17
He was invalided to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley . He stated after the surgery that he was troubled with headaches and with inflammation of the left eye and his vision get bluredif he read too much. Some discharge was still some serious discharge
He was also treated for the chest wound ”superficial” was healing well
Having returned to Canada for disposal by Ottawa. He ceased to be attached to No.1 CDD, Buxton and was SOS (Struck Off Strength). Embarked for Canada from Liverpool 23/02/18.
Authorized under Routine order No. 1080, Para: 8he was Medically Unfit due to the loss of his right eye. Date of Discharge 8/11/18 at London, ON., discharged c/o H. Manderson of Dresden, ON
