Barlow Murray S. Blake

Born 10 December 1925 the son of Dr. Harry Summers and Mrs. Alice M. (nee Smith) Barlow in Merlin, ON.  Of 142 Victoria Ave., Chatham, ON., Brother of Douglas S.(serving in an Armoured unit – Tanks) Robert Blake and William K. Blake attended the Merlin Public School, when his parents moved to Chatham where he attended Central Public School, McKeough Public School and the Chatham Collegiate Institute. The husband of Janet (nee Sheldrick). The father of David (2009) and Debora.  

The Merlin Standard 4/09/41 reported that Murray Blake of Chatham had enlisted in the RCAF and was stationed at the Manning Pool in Toronto. In July of 1941 LAC Barlow was still stationed at the RCAF Manning Pool – Toronto. CDN 28/07/42. Cpl. Barlow was in the photography department at the RCAF Toronto Manning Pool in September of 1942 and was on a short leave to visit his parents in Chatham. He was training to be pilot. However, before he was to deploy for the Pacific, Japan surrendered to end WWII.   

Trained in Canada 18 months. Went overseas and served in England, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. In July of 1942 LAC Barlow was stationed at the RCAF Manning Pool – Toronto.CDN 28/07/42  Cpl. Barlow was in the photography department at the RCAF Toronto Manning Pool in September of 1942 and was on a short leave to visit his parents in Chatham. Promoted from AC2 to Sergeant.

The CDN 5/05/43 reported that Cpl. Barlow had arrived overseas “according to a cable received recently by his parents”. The CDN 23/12/43(P) reported that three of the Barlow brothers, Douglas served with the 11thCanadian Tank Regt., Sgt. Murray was with 429th Squadron RCAF and Keith was overseas with Number 3 Canadian Infantry reserve unit.    

Was wounded and hospitalized August 1945.

Reported sailing on troopship “Pasteur” for Halifax expected to arrive 5 September, 1945. CDN.

Discharged October 13th, 1945.

After the war he enrolled in the “ex-service class” of medicine at the University of Western Ontario. He graduated M.D. in 1950 and completed an internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton.

Dr. Barlow opened his practice at 143 Thames St., Chatham were he remained until his retirement in 1972. After his retirement he went on to be the President of the Kent County Medical Society, President of Windsor Medical Services and other medical interests. He also served as a Chatham City Councillor for three terms. 

Dr. Blake M. Barlow passed away 11/10/2018 at the age of 92 years old.
