Douglas was born in Chatham, ON., the son of H. J. Barclay. Married they lived at 49 Hillyard St., Chatham.
James enlisted in August of 1939 and served in Canada until August 1940, as a private and went overseas with the Essex Scottish, and promoted to corporal. While in England he would transfer to the R.C.O.C. – Holding Unit as a Corporal and from there to the RCAMC.
Transferred to Ordinance and then to the Medical Corps. Remained in England.
Discharged June 8th, 1946.
The CDN 13/06/46 reported that Cpl. Barclay had been awarded the British Empire Medal.
