Ashton, Jay Ernest

 

The son of J. Len and Rebecca Ashton reported living at 550 king St. W., Chatham, ON. The brother of Burton L. Tpr. A3058, RCR.

Jay enlisted with the RCNVR in April of 1941 at HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON. He did his primary training in Windsor for three months. His specialist training was done on the east coast.

Went on active service February 11th, 1942 with the Coastal Patrol.

Eighteen year old Jay was reported to have passed his wireless operators course and was serving on a RCN mine sweeper on active service. CDN 18/02/42  The CDN 16/02/43 Reported The Telegraphist RCNV had arrived  home from Active Service to spend a 28 day leave with his parents.

In February of 1944 Telegraphist Ashton was on a ten-day furlough before attending the Signals School at the St. Hyacinthe, PQ. where he was taking a course. CDN 9/02/44.  Jay had been in the Navy for three years when his older brother returned home. CDN 15/05/44

He was discharged from military service. CDN 21/08/45.

Jay passed away 3 January, 1966.
