He and his family moved to Windsor when he was four. Melvin attended Frank W. Begley public school and the Windsor Vocational School. He enlisted in 1939 at the age of seventeen, trained at Camp Bordon before going oversea. While in England he took commando training.

Reported as a casualty on the Dieppe Raid in the Windsor Star of 16 September, 1942.
