Pte. Service No.: 880109. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box: 108-10, Item No. 6220, PDF: B0108-S010.  Born 12/12/1890, at London, ON. the son of Benoni and Amanda Allen of 38 Lorne Ave, Chatham, ON. The husband of Florence and father of Glen Allen. A single carpenter was living with his wife and son at the Brosco Apartments, Chatham, ON. Complexion, eyes, hair: Fair, Hazel, Brown.

Attestation: 1/03/1916 at Chatham, ON. to the 186th Bn. Roy was 25 years old when he enlisted. Went overseas with the 186th aboard the S. S. Lapland, departing on 28/03/1917 for England.

Pte. Roy Allen was Killed in Action 11/11/1917 and his name is on the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial (Panel 10-26-28) in Belgium.

In his original will, he left all of his belongings to Mrs. Lena Oldershaw of Walkerville, Ontario, who was his legal guardian (mother in law).  Perhaps he wrote his will after the death of his wife.  The will was undated so it is likely that it was written after February 22, 1917.

Events during service

Arrived in Bramshott after sailing on the S.S. Lapland on April 7, 1917
He was transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott.  On August 25, 1917, he joined the 18th Canadian Battalion

On November 17, 1917 he was killed in action in the field in Etaples.

Earnings: Special pension of $35.00 paid to Mrs. Lena Oldershaw.
Other earnings were approximately $20.00/month
His wife, Florence, died on February 22, 1917, so Lena took over his earnings.

Discharge: Discharge upon death November 17, 1917

*His conditions of death were not specific.  All that is written is that he died in Etaples in action, on the field.

Pte. Roy Allen trained in Canada with the 186th Battalion until Mar. 22, 1917 when he left for England. In England, he took the Snipers course and proceeded to France around the beginning of September, 1917.

During a severe engagement at Passchendaele, on Nov. 11, Pte. Allen was killed in action.
