Regimental number: 124323 Reference: RG 150, Volume 22 – 29 Item: 613, DSF: V0022-SO29 Date of Birth 07/10/1895 at St. Thomas ON. Son of John Abray (father); of Highgate, Kent Co., ON  Later living at Turin, ON. A single well driller living at Highgate. Since he was unmarried, his next of kin was his father. Age at enlistment 20 years.

Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Grey , Hair: Fair. Member of the Methodist Church. Height: 5’ 5”, Girth: 37”.

Attestation: Considered fit for service, 30/10/1915 at London, ON. to 10th  Batt. CEF 

John arrived in England on the S.S. Lapland. 20/06/16 transferred to the 5th Batt. He was TOS in the field with the 58th Batt 

Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Grey , Hair: Fair. Member of the Methodist Church. Height: 5’ 5”, Girth: 37”.  Attestation: Considered fit for service, 30/10/1915 at London, ON. to 10th  Batt. CEF 

John arrived in England on the S.S. Lapland. 20/06/16 transferred to the 5th Batt. He was TOS in the field with the 58th Batt.

Mr. and Mrs. Abray received the following news about their son in October 1916:

It appears on 2/10/16 Pte. Abray was with the 3rd Batt, in Boulogne, France.  John was serving with the 18th Bn. Of the CEF.  Landed in France 14/01/17             

2nd October, 1916.

Pte. John W. Abray, No. 124323, was injured, a GSW to his index finger on his left hand on 20 Sept. 1916 at the Somme. Sept.,1916 Admitted to # 5, North General Hospital in Leicester 28/09/16 and No.3 Stationary Hospital, Cologne, France. He was discharged 16/11/16 after 14 days in hospital.

John was then admitted to the Kings Red Cross Convalescent Hospital at Bushey Park for his finger again 16/10/16. And discharged 30/10/16. This wound did not disable him permanently; he made a full recovery. While injured, he was with the 58th Batt.  

John was serving with the 18th Bn. Of the CEF., 5/10/1916. Medical Board: at St. Leonard’s 8/12/16. CCD. St. Leonard’s, Sussex, UK. GSW. Index finger, left hand – Recovered some bone splinters.   

VDG. 9/02/19 at 9th Cdn. Hospital – W8935. 24/06/19 Dispersal Certificate.

Discharge Certificate: Enlisted with the 10th Batt, at London, ON. 30/10/15. Served with the 58th Batt. when overseas. In France. Age: 23 years.

Discharge Section 4/07/1919 at No.1 District Depot. Demobilization.
