Date of Birth: September 26, 1896. Single at the time of enlistment. Religion: Methodist;   He was a fireman prior to enlistment.

Since he was unmarried, his next of kin was his father, James, who lived with Roy in Becher Ontario R.R. No.1

Roy was 5’7, had dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a medium complexion.  His hearing and his eyesight were reported to be perfect at the time of enlistment. 

He enlisted in London, Ontario on January 3, 1918.

He arrived in England on the 4th of March 1918, on the S.S. Cretic and was taken on strength in Bramshott, England with the 4th Reserve on the 5th of August 1918.

Taken on the 18th Canadian battalion in Etaples, France on August 20, 1918.  On the 23rd, he began his training at Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp. He was then transferred to the 18th battalion in Witley, then transferred again on the 19th of August 1918 to the field with the 85th battalion.

On April 4, 1919, he was granted a 14 day leave.  He was stationed in the UK at this time. May 6, 1919 he returned to England and was taken off strength from the 85th battalion.  He was struck off service on June 10, 1919 and sent back to Canada. His discharge papers state that he was discharged due to demobilization.  His official date of discharge was June 15, 1919.

Roy assigned half of his earnings ($30 per month) to his sister, Miss Annie Abrams.  She was ordered to receive $15 per month.  Annie also lived in Becher, Ontario at the same address as Roy’s father, James.  His mother, Alice Abrams of the same address, was ordered to receive this amount before Annie did, but the order was stopped on June 1, 1919.  It is unclear when his mother died and Annie took over the earnings.

After service, he was medically examined, and he had gotten 2 1” scars of both of his knees from his time in battle.  It was also reported that his vision was nowhere near perfect; his post-service examination concluded that his eyesight was 6/12 in both eyes.  His hearing remained normal.

He was reported to reside back in Becher, ON after his discharge.
