Reported for duty on July 4th, 1916, proceeding to London thence to Camp Borden where they encamped until October, returning then to Chatham. They embarked for overseas March 28th, 1917, arriving in England April 26th, proceeding thence to France to the base at Etaples by way of Folkestone and Boulougne reaching the 18th. Battalion August 31th. While acting as runner at Passchendaele in November, he received wounds, necessitating three month Hospital treatment in England. He was then returned to Bramshott to continue training. He remained there till the end of the war. Discharged at London Febuary 17th, 1919 due to demobilisation.
