Walter enlisted in November of 1941. Serving with the armoured corps throughout the Italian campaign and into France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded in the arm from a bomb fragment. While in the UK Walter married Jesse Smith of Aberdeen, Scotland. Reported returning from overseas aboard the troop ship Ile de France, expected in Halifax, NS. second week of April, 1945. Arrived in Chatham from overseas duty 8 August, 1945. SSM Jewell has two brothers in service, Cpl. Earl Jewell in the RCAF and Pte. Murray in the army.
