Charles enlisted at London, ON., in August of 1940 at the age of 26. Home on leave from training in Toronto. TT 17/04/41. It was reported in the TT 22/01/42 that Charles was rejoining his regiment the Elgin Regt. stationed in Sussex, NB. After spending nineteen days on furlough at his home.

Charles arrived in England in October of 1942. TT 29/10/42.

In August of 1943 Charles wrote to the Tilbury Chapter of the I.O.D.E. thanking them as follows:

Members of Tilbury

IODE Chapter.

In acknowledgement of your generosity in sending me such a beautiful kit.

Really I can’t express myself in thanking you women of the I.O.D.E. I sure appreciate your kindness and thank you all very much. I will tale good care of it so that I can bring it back home with me to show my dear mother how kind the women of Tilbury are to we boys overseas.

We sure have been treated like kings by the women of Tilbury. So thanks again rot the lovely kit you sent me.

In closing may I wish all the members of the I.O.D.E., all the success in the world in your work. I know you will be highly rewarded for the work you are doing for the boys in the services.
