Born in 1917 the son of William and Ida (Wilbur) Symes. The brother of Hazel (Richardson), Dorothy (Enockson) John and Gertrude.  Husband of Mary Jean ‘Jessie’ (nee Duceder). The father of Veronica (LaLiberte), Judy and Terry.

Previous Military Experience… None

It was reported in the CDN 4/12/44 that L/Stoc. Symes had arrived the previous week after twenty one months in service overses was on leave at his Selkirk St. home. CDN 4/12/44

History After Enlistment… Served aboard the Corvette H.M.C.S. Summerside from October 1943 to November 1944 in the Atlantic. Was a member of the first ship to land in the invasion on D-Day.

Date of Discharge… September 17th 1945

After the war George worked at the Maintenance Dept. – Kent County Board of Education.

George passed away 26 Dec. 1987 at the age of 70 years, internment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Chatham. ON.
