Served in the Great War in the RAF from 1917 to 1919 flying as a night-flyer and rose to the rank of Squadron Commander with the rank of Captain.  

The son of H. A. Stonehouse. A graduate of Osgoode Hall, he became the Official Receiver under the Farmers Creditor’s Arrangements Act. Ran as candidate Lambton–Kent federal riding but defeated. Ex-Mayor of Wallaceburg and served a number of years as a town councillor. 

Captain Calvert S. Stonehouse enlisted at Toronto in the Royal Flying Corps as a Cadet June 5th 1917. Proceeded to England  September 29th, 1917. Went to France with the R.F.C. as 2nd Lieutenant March 1st, 1918. Promoted to Lieutenant  April 1st 1918. Promoted to Captain September 1918. Promoted to Squadron Commander January 3rd 1919. Left France for England February 14th 1919. Still commanded same squadron until June 30th 1919 when he returned to Canada.

Demobilized August 11th, 1919, and placed on the reserve as a Flying Officer.

In October of 1939 he reenlisted in the RCAF, a brother H. C. ‘Babe’ Stonehouse enlisted in the CASC. CDN 21/10/39.  Between the wars he conducted a successful business. He had been involved in local political life in the area, 12 years in council, 2 years as Mayor of Wallaceburg. In 1930 he ran  for the federal local seat.  The Father of Llewellyn.

The WN 11/04/40 reported that F/O. Stonehouse was stationed in Toronto when he was granted a leave of absence to visit his home in Wallaceburg. In November 1940 now Captain  and his appointment as Flying Officer had been approved. He had applied for a leave of absence until April of 1940 since he was the Conservative Candidate in the upcoming election. He was sent to the RCAF Manning Depot and will be placed from there.

In November 1940 he was promoted to the rank of Flight Lieut. in the RCAF and was stationed in Ottawa as a recruiting officer covering London, Hamilton and Toronto.

The Wallaceburg News 26/06/41 reported the Lieut. Stonehouse was stationed at RCAF Headquarters, Ottawa. He was home on a week-end leave with Mrs. Stonehouse and family.
