Born 26/10/1916 at Chatham Twsp., Kent Co., ON. the son of Stanley and Margaret (Post) Smith, of R. R. # 6 Wallaceburg, Chatham Twsp, Kent Co., Ontario, Canada. The brother of Stewart S. OS. RCNVR and John 15th Field Ambulance RCAMC. Walter at home and six sisters: Mrs. Earl Raymond, Mrs. Fred Shepley, Mrs. Bert Haynes of Detroit, Jean, Dorothy and Donna at home. CDN 27/06/45 He attended school in Chatham Twsp., a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Wallaceburg. Took up farming on his fathers farm.

Douglas enlisted in London, ON with the Royal Canadian Regiment the 20th March, 1940 (the 846 enlistment in the Regt.) trained in London, Toronto and Camp Bordon, ON. He went overseas with the RCR 13/11/1940.  He was with his unit seeing combat in Sicily and Italy.

The WN 18/03/43(P) was reported that along with brothers John and Stewart. Then L/Cpl. Douglas Stewart was serving with “A” Coy.,RCR serving overseas. He was with his unit seeing combat in Sicily and Italy. He was wounded in the arm in November of 1943 and spent about four months in hospital. When recovered he rejoined his unit, he would have been 28 years old on 26 October.   

Douglas was wounded in November of 1943 while in combat for the village of Abissinia near Ortona and died of those wounds.

The CDN 13/09/44 reported that Cpl. Douglas H. Smith was in Italy and died 3 September 1944 while in action against the enemy. 

Age: 27, DOW –  Date of Death: 03/09/1944.
