The WJ 12/12/40 stationed at the Toronto Manning Pool when he was given a weekend leave to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. Rude Smith of Port Alma. The WJ 19 /12/40 reported Carlyle spent a weekend with his parents. He was transferred from the Manning Pool at Toronto to a new school at Picton, ON. He was enjoying the training as well as the change of depots.

The Merlin Standard 2/01/41 reported that Carlyle was stationed at RCAF – Picton and had spent Christmas at his home in Merlin. LAC Smith was home on a week-end leave from RCAF – Dunnville. In April Carlyle was transferred from RCAF – Rockcliffe, Ottawa  to Victoriaville, PQ. MS 3/04/41 In May he was stationed at RCAF – Hamilton, ON when he was home in Port Alma. The WJ 29/05/41 reported LAC Smith of RCAF-Hamilton spent a week at his home in Port Alma.  The WJ 10/07/41 reported that LAC Smith of RCAF-Dunnville spent a weekend at home in Port Alma.

LAC Carlyle Smith received his “Wings” at RCAF Dunnville Air Training School, at his graduation were Mr. and Mrs. Rude Smith and family. MS 28/08/41.

A ‘farewell party” was held in Merlin for Carlyle he was presented with a Rolls razor on behalf of the community. MS 4/09/41

The CDN 9/07/42 reported that Carlyle was serving in Egypt was confined to hospital but, “expects to leave there shortly.
