While flying a Lancaster with the RAF on  operations over Dusseldorf, Germany a Junkers JU88 attacked his aircraft at 7000 feet. Wounding the rear gunner it also shot off the tail plane, and put two of the four engines of the Lancaster out of commission, and destroyed the panes navigational gear.
