Resident Blenheim

The son of James and Laura Minerva “Minnie (nee Burk) Rutherford of  Blenheim, Gordon was the second youngest of seven children. Gordon attended school in Blenheim where he also enjoyed playing baseball and running.

A single student living at home. Member of 24th Kent Regt. Attestation: 28/11/1916 at London, ON. to 63rd Battery Depot. Went on to serve with distinction with the CFA 43rd Battery, in a CDN 3/04/19 it was reported that he continued to serve his four inch gun, “after all the other crew had been killed and fired 400 wounds.” Photograph found in “In Khaki – Blenheim”.

After his discharge from the army he attended Woodstock Baptist College for Boys. From there he enrolled to study medicine at the University of Toronto graduating M. B. in 1927. From there he went to New York to specialize in surgery at Frances Hospital wher he graduated in 1928. Well in New York he met and married Dellmarion Thumb in 1928 and he and his wife moved to Chatham, ON living at 288 Queen Street. In 1930 the Rutherfords had a son John Thumb Rutherford.

Dr, Rutherford died suddenly at his office on 4 January, 1932 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Blenheim, ON.
