Resident Wallaceburg

Born in Tilbury East the son of Jerome and Olive (Lozon) of 218 Fraser St. Wallaceburg, ON. Clifford spent his boyhood years in Tilbury East where he went to school attending Our Lady of Help – Separate School. Later the family moved to Windsor where Clifford worked for the Ford Motor Car Co. The family then moved to Wallaceburg and Clifford worked at the Dominion Glass Co. for seven years before enlisting in the army.

Although 35 years of age at the time Clifford was one of the first employees at the glass company to enlist in May of 1940..

Clifford enlisted 3 August, 1940 in the First Kents and received training in Chatham and later served with that unit in Halifax, Hamilton and Terrace, BC. He would go overseas in late May of 1942 transferring to a re-enforcement unit. He would later be attached to the 1st Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry.  Clifford went to France with the HLI 3rd Division on D-Day 6 June, 1944. He would fight through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany. He was slightly wounded but remained on duty.

It was reported that Pte. Peltier was ‘Mentioned In Dispatches’, “for gallant and distinguished service overseas” in the CDN 22/06/45 & 22/06/45.  Reported returning from overseas duty aboard the vessel Queen Mary docking at New York City. CDN 11/07/45. Clifford just missed the two days before the rioting at Aldershot, “rumour going around that the rest of the troops would have to wait until September for a boat home”.

Like soldiers of all ages the Canadian soldiers were fond of collecting souvenirs and Cpl. Peltier was no exception three Nazi flags, medals, buttons Nazi coins, a German trench knife and a rusty Luger pistol all found their way back to Wallaceburg. CDN 20/06/45. More to his mother liking was the “beautiful table spread from Udam, Germany which he ‘liberated’.

The July article pointed out that Clifford had volunteered for Pacific duty and would report in thirty days, at which that war would be over first. WN 19/07/45.
