Born 16/10/1914 in Merlin, County of Kent, ON. The son of Leonard and Maude Evelyn (Powell) Near. The brother of: Verna (Chatworthy) and Howard.  

Elmer enlisted as a Spr. in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  Trained at Petawawa, Lethbridge, British Columbia and later was sent to Kiska.  

Discharged from the Army in January 1947.

He married 7/11/1940 to Dorothy (nee Lackey) and had two children Dr. John Near and Joyce (Brush)

Elmer passed away 6 February, 2014 and is buried at the Merlin Cemetery.
