Regimental number: 123941, Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992/93/166, Box 6314-36, Item: 174918, PDF:- B6314-SO36.  Born 29/12/1886, the son of Oliver Austin Mooney and Sarah Elisabeth Mooney of 50 Water Lane Stratford, E.15, London, England. A single farmer. Attestation: 4/10/1915 at Chatham, ON. to the 70th overseas battalion.  

Age 28 yrs. 9 Mths,  Height: 5’ 6 1/2”, 142#, Girth: 37”, Vaccine: 1901.Transferred to 39th Batt. 10/07/16.   Overseas 38th Bn. 12/02/17.  Can. Inf: 505/16. TOS 15/12/16.  Reported ill 19/10/16. 31/10/16 – Reported to ‘Medical Board’  – 13/11/1916. Sprained Tendon Right Leg – recovered in 4 months.  

Private Mooney was promoted to Sergeant Dec. 15, 1915, and embarked with the 70th battalion for overseas Apr. 16, 1916.

In England he passed his examination as Instructor In Musketry, training until Dec. 28, when he proceeded to France attached to the 38th battalion.

He was killed in action at Vimy Ridge Apr. 9, 1917.  John was KIA 9/04/1917 at Vimy Ridge. Buried at Givenchy –En- Goohelle, Canadian Cemetery, Pas de Calsis, Fr. [PDF: B6314-S036] .
