Joined the Kent Regiment in 1923 as a private and rose to the rank of Captain in August 1939. M.G. in October 1939. CDN 21/10/39. The IODE(N) list his rank as Capt.

Assumed appointment of Adjutant of #12 Basic Training Centre. Chatham, Ontario. Promoted to the rank of Major February 10th, 1943 to December 18th, 1943.  The CDN 24/12/43 reported That Major Merritt had completed a “war-staff” course at Kingston, ON. He arrived back in Chatham with Mrs. Merritt for Christmas. The Major had received an appointment to the Pacific Command at Vancouver, BC. He would leave for the west coast to take on his duties there.  

Posted to Headquarters Pacific Command, Vancouver following course at R.M.C. and remained there until May 23rd 1944. Posted to H.Q’s M.D. 3 at Kingston May 24th, 1944 and remained there until demobilized. Awarded the Efficiency Decoration.

The CDN 29/12/44 reported that Major Merritt arrived in Chatham from Kingston, ON. on a New Years leave to be with his wife at their home on Lorne Ave., in Chatham.

Discharged July 2nd, 1946.
