The son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen McCallum of Lot 24, Concession 4, Chatham, Gore.  Ivan was born on that site. Ivan attended the district public school. He had two brothers Gordon and Sgt. Arthur McCallum of the Wallaceburg Police. Next of kin listed as Mrs. D. McCallum of 514 Emily St. Wallaceburg, ON.  This would have been his wife and they had three children Donald, Patricia and Larry. Prior to his enlistment he was employed at the Schultz Die-Casting Co. of Wallaceburg and later at the Polymer Corporation in Sarnia just before he enlisted.  WN 3/05/45

Ivan was reported in the WN 27/01/44 ‘CHARLEMONT’ who was stationed at Brampton spent a Sunday with his parents.

The WN 25/10/45 reported that after his training in Canada was completed, he was sent overseas with a re-enforcement unit. Once in England he was attached to an armoured training unit and was sent to France to join the 1st Hussars – ‘C’ Squadron tanks. He was reported as MIA the third week of April 1945. A few days later he was reported to be in a German POW camp. The fighting at that time was “fast and furious” and the POW camp where he was a prisoner was soon overrun and captured and he was liberated 10 May, 1945 and returned to England.

Reported arriving from overseas duty aboard the transport S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam, arriving at Halifax, NS. CDN 29/09/45. The WN 25/10/45 reported that Tpr. McCallum was enjoying a leave at his home, then on Lafontaine St., Wallaceburg. He had been appointed to the sales staff for the 9th Victory Loan for the Wallaceburg and area. Ivan was reported to have commented on this: “I was in the fighting long enough to know what it was all about. I’m not a super salesman but I’m certainly going to do my best to help put the 9th Victory Loan over the top.”
