James was the youngest of eight children Isabell, Neil, John, Effie, Colin, Archer and Peter. James attended Medical school at Queen’s University graduating from Medical School in 1914.

Attestation: 3/06/1915 at Victoria, B.C., Age; 27 yrs. 4 mos. Height: 5’ 11”, Girth: 37”. Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Light Brown. Bridge Rt. Upper teeth. Medical “fit” Medical Exam 2/06/1915 at Victoria, BC.

Reported to the 2nd CMR transferring to the 9th Field Ambulance, C.A.M.C. Date of sailing: 12/06/15. Disembarked at Boulage 22/09/15 upon reaching France to No. 1 Canadian Hospital.

Captain McAskill was assigned CMR As Medical Officer. He was granted a LOA 28/04/16 to 6/05/16 – he returned from leave 13/05/16 9th Can. Field Ambulance, 18/06/16 and 60th

Batt. 15/11/16. He was assigned Medical Officer to the RCR, No. 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital. And 15/11/16 to No.1 Cdn. General Hospital. 19/11/16 to RCR – in the Field to 12/11/16 as a result he was awarded the Military Cross.

Captain McAskill was granted a leave from 7/01/17 to 21/01/17 leave. He was granted another leave 26/05/17 returning 9/06/17.  One of these leaves may have for the Military Cross.  He reported to 3rd Cdn. Stationary Hospital 22/07/17 he reported to #1 Canadian GEN. Hospital on a 14 day leave. 

6/03/1919 He was with the 9th Field Ambulance. Once again he was assigned as Medical Officer to the RCR No. 3 Cdn Stat. Hospital an form there he was SOS 22/03/1919 – General Demob. 27/10/1919.

A foot note with an address of 500 Woolworth Bldg. Watertown, New York, USA. ?    

Major McAskill sailed for Canada 8/03/1919. 

There is and indication that he was awarded the MC. Found on pg. 269 “Orford Story 1827 – 1977”.  In fact Major McAskill receive a Bar to his Military Cross equal to two MC 

After the war Dr. McAskill  married Hannah Edith Stanton of Mull 3/06/1919. In 1920 Dr. and Mrs. McAskill were living in New York City, eventually they would settle in Watertown, New York.

Dr. James Ernest McAskill passed away 6/10/1956 in Watertown, NY.  CDP 4/06/1919, CKPT.
