The CDN 8/09/43 (P) reported home from overseas. Sgt. Matthews had been selected to be sent back home to train for an officer after being in England for 14 months.

In the article Sgt. Matthews warned people at home to write cheerful letters to the boys overseas. He warned against letters asking the boys to come home, there job England is finished and the have the right to come home.

Sgt. Clayton wanted to tell civilians to realize they have a job to do and will stay that job is done. ‘weepy’ letters are not welcomed by the men who receive them. The men overseas are treated very well. The English and the Scots especially go out of their way with Canadians. So far only the Raid on Dieppe has involved the Canadians.

In January of 1944 Lieut. Matthews was on a twenty-four day furlough with his wife and daughter at their home on Wellington Street West in Chatham. CDN 26/01/44. The CDN 22/07/44 reported that Lieut.
