The son of Bertha and John E. Liberty of Wabash, Kent Co. ON. Married, his wife was working in Barrie in 1945. An electrical engineer prior to his enlistment working mostly  in eastern Canada.

John enlisted with the Queen’s Own Rifles 8 June1943 and transferred to an armoured unit. He trained at Toronto, Brantford, Camp Borden and Debert NS. before going overseas in May 1944.

He was wounded on D-Day 6 June, 1944 in the hand as he jumped from a landing craft. “Someone pulled him out of the water and he finally found himself in a hospital in England.” He said it was all like a bad dream.

He quickly recovered and was discharged from hospital. He went to France as a reinforcement to the Lake Superior Armoured Regt. and back in action in August of 1944 fighting with the Canadians through Holland.

John was wounded again on 30 September of 1944. This time the wound was in the head and leg and he was hospitalized for 22 days.

The CDN 24/03/45(P) reported on his return home and the welcome home party attended by “more than 100 people. He was hopeful that once his leave is over he will be sent back to rejoin his regiment. “You feel you are living over there” he said.
