Resident Wallaceburg

The only son of Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Johnson of 329 William, St., Wallaceburg. Born in Wallaceburg he was active in baseball and basketball before he enlisted.  He attended Central public school and Wallaceburg High School. After he graduated from Wallaceburg High School he worked for a paint firm in Windsor prior to his enlistment.

Fred enlisted in 1942, trained at BTC No. 12, Chatham.  Fred was reported training at No.12 BTC-Chatham in July of 1942 when he was given a week-end pass to visit his family, Fred was still at No.12 BTC in August of 1942. WN 6/08/42 He later trained at Camp Ipperwash prior to his going overseas. He took additional training in England before being sent to Italy with a re-enforcement draft to the Perth Regt. He was wounded in September of 1943 and spent time in hospitals in Italy and England. He was discharged from Crumlin Military hospital.

The WN 25/02/43 reported that Fredrick spent the week end leave at his parents and again in June. WN 17/06/43 The WN 26/08/43 reported that L/Cpl. Johnson who was training at BTC No.12 – Chatham was on a weekend pass to visit his parents in Wallaceburg.

He took additional training in England before being sent to Italy with a re-enforcement draft to the Perth Regt.

He was seriously wounded, fragment wounds to the abdomen in September of 1943, while serving with the Perth Regt. in Italy. The family was notified that, though the wounds were serious they expected he would recover.  He would spend time in hospitals in Italy and England. He was discharged from Crumlin Military hospital.

The WN 4/01/45 reported that Pte. Johnson was “on his way home”, expected in Wallaceburg in the next weekend to ten days.
