Unit # #4 Provost Corps

A veteran of the Great War. Born 10 March, 1899 at Wiarton, ON.  The husband of Neta Laverne of 400 Queen St., Chatham, the father Ivan. It was reported that Russell had been promoted to Major. CDN 28/12/44(P). Captain Hunter received his Mention In Dispatches while serving in France. He also earned the Canadian Efficiency Decoration  in July of 1944.

Captain Hunter was a postal clerk in Chatham prior to the outbreak of WWII He went overseas with the Provost Corps in September of 1941 and transferred to the Postal Corp. He was promoted to acting Captain in November of 1943 and was confirmed in December of that year. He served in Africa and Italy and it was believed he was serving in France in July 1944.

He had recently returned from Belgium.

The CDN 10/12/45(P) reported that Major Hunter had seen action in Africa, Italy, France and Belgium was reported on the troopship “Mauretania”, expected to make Halifax that night. 

The CDN 10/12/45 reported that he returned to Canada aboard the S. S. Mauretania. Next of Kin: Mrs. R. G. [Netta] Hunter, 400 Queen St., Chatham, ON.
