Howe, John Arthur

 

The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Arthur Howe of Wallaceburg. Next of kin reported as F. Brown, Charing Cross Road, Kent Co., ON.  Served in Canada for nearly four years. Went overseas as a Lieutenant on loan to the Imperial forces and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Was wounded and hospitalized in Brussels and Birmingham.

In September of 1942 John was a Corporal in the First Kent Regt., then station at New Westminister, BC. he had returned to Chatham for his marriage to Miss Barbara Ruth Buchanan. CDN 2/09/42. The wedding was preformed at Christ Church. CDN 11/09/42(P). Mrs. Howe accompanied Cpl. Howe to British Columbia, they planned to visit the Harrison Hot Springs on their way west.

The CDN 23/10/43 reported he had arrived from the east coast on a two week leave with his wife. They were staying at his wife’s parents at Charring Cross. They would be in Detroit with Mrs. Charles Clark the sister of his wife. 

The CDN 4/04/44 reported that Lieut. and his wife (nee Brown) had arrived from the West Coast to spend a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown, his wife’s parents living at Charing Cross, Kent Co. The couple left for the East Coast after their visit with both sides of their families the other in Wallaceburg. 

The CDN 10/06/44 (P) reported that Lieut Howe was serving in the British army overseas. His wife residing with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown of Charing Cross Road.

The CDN 12/10/44 reported that Lieut. Howe had been wounded in action and was writing to his wife from a casualty clearing station in Belgium. He reported that he was “feeling fine”. He went on to write that, “the bullet which caused his injuries, entered his chest from the back and ripped her picture right in two.”  He gave full praise to the soldiers who got him away to a clearing station after he was injured. He expected that he might be sent to a hospital in Brussels or England to recuperate.

Reported arriving from overseas duty aboard the transport S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam, arriving at Halifax, NS. CDN 29/09/45. 

Discharged November 16th, 1945.
