Remained in Canada until October 31st, 1941.  Went overseas and acted as Paymaster for the R.C.A. in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Promoted to the rank of Captain. Was hospitalized two months in England for an injury.

Discharged February 4th, 1946.

The CDN 2/11/45 reported that Captain Hayes had returned from overseas and was looking forward to resuming his pre-war insurance business in the area.

Prior to his enlistment in 1940 George was the manager of the Northern Life Assurance Company. He had joined the company in 1926 and upon deciding to be a life underwriter in 1934 he had moved to Chatham.
