Unconscious Soldier Found On Highway”, this was the by-line in the Tilbury Times of 22 August, 1943. The soldier was found lying unconscious on the side of No. 2 Highway by 10 miles east of Tilbury by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Nantais was first taken to the Military Hospital at No. 12 BTC in Chatham and from there transported to the Public General Hospital where it was determined he had suffered a fractured skull.

It was first thought that perhaps he had been robbed but a $10.00 bill and some change was on him along with a weekend pass to visit friends in the area. “The most plausible theory was that he was struck by a hit-and-run driver, though the location of the blow and the lack of other injuries laves that theory open to question.

In early September George’s condition had not improved and it was decided that he should be moved from the Public General Hospital in Chatham to Westminister Hospital in London, ON., in exceedingly critical condition. “He has been able to take nourishment and to talk a little, but is not yet in condition to be questioned as to what actually happened to him.
