Resident Ridgetown

He enlisted in London, ON. 9/03/1942. He trained for six months in London and then went to A-29 CITC at Kitchener for 12 months before going overseas 6/06/1944. Before leaving for overseas he received permission to marry Miss Dorthy Field, daughter of Percy of Ridgetown, which they did while George had ‘embarkation leave’.

He joined the Canadian Scottish Regt. of Victoria B.C. in France after the fall of Cean. He then fought through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany where while in Oldenburg on 4 May, 1945 he heard of the Armistice ending the war in Europe. His regiment was sent back to Holland to guard 8,000 German POW’s.

George was re-posted to the Highland Light Infantry from Galt, ON. (now Cambridge) and was returned to Aldershot, England on 9/11/1945. The regiment sailed for Canada 20/12/1945 on the Queen Elizabeth for New York. From there to New Jersey to catch a troop train that would eventually return the troops to Galt. He was met at the station by Mr. and Mrs. Archie Warwick.

Supplemental Information The son of Mary West and LeRoy Gilbert. George was raise on a farm in Howard Twsp., Kent Co. two miles west of Ridgetowm. He attended Rushton’s Public School and Ridgtown High and Vocational Schools.
