Drohan, Arthur Brooks

 

The son of Mr. A. P. and Margarette Drohan of Wellington St., Chatham (1942), the brother of CQS. Pat, serving in the First Kent’s and younger brother Jack who was taking the officers training course at St. Michael’s College in Toronto.

Art enlisted in 1942 first stationed at No.2 Manning Depot at Brandon, MB., after a short time there he was transferred to Winnipeg for his wireless course which lasted from April until October. It was while being in the west that Art developed a lasting regard for the western people. “The people used to invite us to their homes and entertain us royally. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the west.” He also trained at Fingal, and gunnery at Mossbank, SK.

Trained in Canada one year. Went overseas June 1942 and served three years. Promoted to the rank of Flying Officer.

His graduating squadron had the distinction of having their ‘Wings’ presented by Air Commodore Lawrence of No.2 Command. They were confirmed this honour by having the highest marks than any other squadron graduating from No.3 School in Winnipeg of 90%. CDN 20/11/42(P)

The CDN 31/05/43 reported that the parents of Flt. Sgt. A. Drohan had arrived safely overseas. “they now have two sons serving in the armed services overseas.” That would be James Patrick serving with the Essex Scottish.

The CDN 12/03/45 reported that P/O. Drohan the son of Mrs. A. P. Drohan and the late Mr. Drohan  of 208 Wellington St. west, Chatham was on ‘compassionate leave’ his mother was ill and confined to St. Joseph’s hospital in Chatham. Arthur had been serving overseas as a wireless air gunner (WAG) with the RCAF.

Discharged May 1945.
