The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Draper of Buckingham Avenue, Chatham, ON., married his wife also living in Chatham.

L/Cpl Draper appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment, (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown), Service number A470378.

He enlisted in the active service stationed at No.12 BTC, Chatham as an instructor. He would later surrender his rank and reverted to a Private to proceed overseas. CDN 23/12/44(P). After arriving in England he was posted to a Canadian regiment in Italy.

Posted to the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. He saw action in Italy.

Pte. Draper was seriously wounded during the Moro River / Ortona campaign the wound would result in the loss of his right arm above the elbow. Robert’s wife would receive a cable informing her that it had been necessary to amputate his right arm above the elbow and that at the present time he is seriously ill in hospital. The message went on to say that as future information is available it would be forwarded to her. The CDN 2/01/45 reported that he was making “splendid progress in hospital and had been removed from the list of those seriously ill.” That message was dated 27 December, 1944.

A letter received by his wife from the Ministry of National Defence dated 27 December, 1944 read:

“The Ministry of National Defence is pleased to inform you that Pte. Robert John Draper is reported officially to be making satisfactory progress and has been removed from the seriously ill list” .

Promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Discharged June 25th, 1945.
