Born 30 January, 1913 in Wallaceburg, ON. The son of Arthur and Cassie (nee Magee) Doan.

Prior to his enlistment he was  truck driver working for Cross Supply & Paving Co. Ltd in Windsor, ON.

Ward enlisted 14 June, 1941 in Windsor and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, Kent Regt. While he was in Canada he was stationed at London, ON., Camp Diagara and Terrance BC where he received his basic training, advanced infantry training and he qualified as a driver.

He embarked for England 4/02/43 and disembarked 13/02/43. He remained in England until 29/06/43. While in England he enlisted with the Highland Light Infantry (HLI) of Canada. He embarked for the Central Mediterranean theatre 30 June, 43 arriving 11/07/43 and he remained there until March of 1945. 

While he was in the Mediterranean he qualified as a Cook ‘C’ 19/10/43 and was assigned to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada 21/10/43, by January of 1945 he was designated Cook ‘B’.

He was sent to the north West Europe theatre from 20 March, 1945 until the end of the European war 

He was welcomed home by the special welcoming committee chaired by Ted Carter, Canadian Legion, the war Services committee of the Dominion Glass Company. WN 25/01/46

He would remain in service after the war until he and his spouse qualified for a Veteran Loan Agreement  which allowed them to obtain a farm. 

He died of a coronary 5 March, 1946 in Wallaceburg he had signed his discharge papers on 2 March. His death was deemed to be related to his service. He was buried at Riverview Cemetery on 8 March, 1946.

He was survived by his parents Arthur (1879 – 1961) his mother Cassie (1892 and seven siblings. His wife IIeen (nee Foster) Doan (11 October,1922 to 3 July, 1946) four months after her husbands death she fell from a moving truck. There son Carlyle Steven ‘Steve’ born 18 July 1940 – 22 January, 2017) they also had a daughter Doris (nee Doan) Richmond born 27 July 1942 was living in St. Marys, ON. It is likely that the children were raised by their maternal grandmother Mrs. Fannie E. Foster of Wallaceburg.
