Devereux, Ralph Spence

 

 

Born 19/10/1915 in Howard Twsp., son of Joseph Lanceley and  Bertha Ann (nee Spence), brother of Clarence Glenn, Harold and Walter of Howard Twsp. and sister Ruth (Cooper). Educated at S.S. No. 16 (Clark’s), Ridgetown High School and Vocational School and London Normal School.

The husband of Frances (nee Hignell) and Kathryn (nee Hitch 1958, daughter of D.A. Hitch). The father of Janet (VanOstrand), Susan (McKillop) and David. 

Ralph enlisted in the RCAF in May 1941, served as Radar Instructor Airborne in England for six months and in Canada until the end of the War in 1945.

After the war he received his MA in Philosophy and Psychology (1948) from the University of Western Ontario. He was appointed School Psychologist for the Windsor Board of Education 1941 – 51. He became Master at London Teachers’ College from 1951-62 where he established the Educational and Child Psychology programs.

In 1962 Ralph was founding Principal of Windsor Teachers’ College. In 1970-72 as Principal and Professor, Faculty of Education, he organized its integration with the University of Windsor. He retired as Associate Dean in 1975. 

On retirement he returned to London where he founded the Senior Alumni Program at the University of Western Ontario in 1977 that now has weekly lectures in London and Toronto branches. Western honoured him with an LLD (1985) and the Alumni Award of Merit (1986).

Ralph passed away 30 June, 2004 at Parkwood Veterans Hospital, London, ON., at the age of 88 years.  He is buried at Woodland Cemetery London, ON.
