Married Eliza (Baker – widow) of England. Living in Chatham, ON. in 1915, the daughter of Henry and Eliza (nee Leave) Howes. From Record of Marriage-Kent Co. 1915. They were living at 18 Delaware Ave., Chatham, ON. He was employed as a Baker.He had eight years experience with the Connought Rangers.

Attestation: 28/02/1916 at Chatham, ON. to the 186th Battalion. He was 38 years 8 months; Fair – complexion, Blue Eyes and Brown Hair. 5’ 51/2”.

 

Jeremiah was reported at Camp Borden for training 13/09/16. He was reported in Chatham, On for his pre-overseas “Medical Board” 1/03/17 at which time he was reported “Fit”.  He enlisted in Chatham Feb. 16, 1916 in the 186th battalion and after training with them at London, Camp Borden and Chatham proceeded overseas with them Mar. 1917.

He embarked in Halifax aboard the S.S. Lapland 25/03/17 and disembarked at Liverpool, England 7/04/17 7/04/17. TOS Segregation Camp – Bramshot, England, . Transferred to 4th Cdn. Batt. at Bramshot 7/04/17. TOS with 18th Batt. preparing for France, 16/06/17. Arrived at Estaples, France, 19/06/17. Reported at 2nd Cdn.Ept., Batt. 8/07/17. He joined the 18th Batt. “In the Field” 25/08/17   

Transferred to 4th Reserve Batt. at Bramshot Camp, transferred to 18th Batt. 16/06/17.

Jeremiah arrived in France 16/06/17 and he joined the 18th In the Field in France 19/08/17. On the 22nd of August, 1917 he was KIA “Killed by Enemy shell bursting on the Road. Only three days on active service before being killed.

After a short course of instruction in England he crossed to France in June 1917.

He was killed in action Aug. 21, 1917 and was buried in Lens Cemetery.

Buried at Aux-Noulette Communal Cemetery Extenson, Pas de Calis France.

On 26 May, 1920 His wife Eliza received his War Service Gratuity of $100.00 + $80.00 Bonus.
