Cowan, Louis

 

Prior to enlisting in the RCAF Louis was in the 2nd Bn. Kent Regt.  (Boy), Appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown). Under aged enlistment.

A cable was received by Louis’s wife that he had arrived safely overseas. CDN 23/03/44 In November of 1944, Louis and Doris received “the congratulations of their friends on the birth of their son Louis Bruce at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chatham. P/O Cowan was overseas at the time of his sons birth. CDN 9/11/44

A wireless operator in a Halifax bomber flying with 433 Squadron – “Porcupine”,  was shown with F/O S. V. McKellar(Pilot) before taking off to attack the German town of Hagen in the Ruhr Valley. CDN 15/02/45. Louis was reported returned from overseas after completing a tour of 31 missions, 19 were over German territory. Flying mostly in Halifax bombers he said “The raids we made Germany, were attacks on the Ruhr Valley. The Germans had most of the war supplies concentrated there and they offered us plenty of resistance. Mine laying was our job on other trips and these were laid along the coast of Norway.”

Louis was happy to be home and happier still to meet his five month old son Bruce. Louis passed away 7/05/03.

Supplemental Information The son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cowan of Chatham, ON. Married to Doris (nee Roszell) formerly of Fletcher, then living at 23 Emma St., Chatham. He was an “enthusiastic athlete” very interested in basketball.
