Born in Chatham Twsp., Kent Co., ON., son of George and Rebecca Coulter of Dover Centre. Married to Violet from England. George was attending medical school at Queen’s Univeristy, Kingston, ON., when he enlisted in April of 1915 as a member of the Queen’s contingent as a Lieutenant.

left for overseas 1/05/1915 aboard the S.S. Matagama. June 16th he transferred to the Imperial Army and began training in England. 9/09/1915 he became second in command of an ambulance unit and was sent to France.

During the Battle of St. Eloi he received a head wound and was returned to England for treatment and hospitalization for recovery, then returned to his former unit in France. In June of 1916 he was transferred to the Heavy Artillery and was promoted to the rank of Captain. In August of 1916 he was promoted again for bravery during severe fighting and was Gazetted Major, at the same time he was gassed. Suffering from the effects of the 1915 head wound and a nervous breakdown Walter was returned to England for the duration of the war.

After the war Walter returned to Chatham, ON., and continued his connection with the military by becoming the Medical Officer for the 24th Kent Regt. He was also the physician for the County Jail and for the local Canadian National Railway operations.

He married Violet (Robbins) and they had two sons; Dr. Patrick T. (Mayo Clinic), Dr. Stewart G. ‘Mike’ who moved to Toronto.
