Coatsworth, Thomas Emerson

Born in Blenheim, ON., the son J. Kent and Maude Coatsworth of Chatham. The husband of Ora Irene (nee Stevenson) Coatsworth. The father of Dean and Paul. All of his family were living in Chatham. 

Lieutenant Coatswoth was reported in the CDN 21/12/42 having completed a course at Kingston, ON., with the Canadian Corps of Signals. He and his wife were staying at his family home before he left to rejoin the First Kent Regiment (active) at Victoria, BC.

Prior to going overseas as part of the “CanLoan” program he served chiefly as a signals officer. [news article of unknown date or paper (P)]. The CDN 10/04/44 reported that Captain Coatsworth was serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He had been in Britain on an instructor course returning to Wwstern Canada and the First Kents. CDN16/11/44.

He had training with Cadets and took a Signal Course before joining First Kent Regiment (Active).

The CDN 1/03/45 reported that Major Coatsworth had recently left to proceed overseas with a Recce unit.

Served Fifty-one months in Canada. Served fourteen months overseas in England, Belgium, France the Netherlands and Germany. Promoted to Staff Sergeant. Then promoted to Second Lieutenant in June 1940, then promoted to Lieutenant during February 1941, then promoted to Captain to go overseas January 1945. Awarded the Defence of Britain Medal and the C.V.S.M. with Clasp.

Discharged December 1945.

Major Coatsworth passed away 10 Sep., 1986  – Buried at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, ON..
