The second son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Kenneth Carswell of Lowe St., Chatham, ON. he had a brother Kenneth (LAC R83322) plus a younger brother Douglas. He attended McKeough School and the Chatham Vocational School  Prior to the war Roger was an employee of the Chatham Daily News in the Stereotyping department of the CDNHe had a ‘keen’ interest in Scouting in Chatham of No. 2 Troop, he was a King’s Scout.

He joined the RCAF as an AC2 (R201015) on 1/12/1942, at the age of 19 years. He trained at Lachine, PQ. Turo NS. Belleville, ON. He would graduate from No. 4 Air Observer School at Crumlin as a navigator. His parents and brother Cpl. Kenneth Carswell. He received his Navigator “Wings” and commissioned as a Pilot Officer at RCAF-Crumlin.

The CDN 24/05/43 reported that LAC Carswell was stationed at N0.5, I.T.S, Belleville, was reported on a week-end furlough. He visited with his father and mother at their home on Lowe St. 

 He receiving his commission as a P/O. At 4th Air Observer School at Crumlin as a Navigator. His parents were in attendance as well as his brotherDouglas.

He graduated from No. 4 Air Observer School at Crumlin as a navigator and received his commission as a P/O. Roger would be promoted to Flying Officer while in the UK where he arrived in March of 1944 CDN 8/09/18(P) F/O Carswell would begin his operational flying on D-Day and by V-E Day would have logged 36 operational flights. 

He remained in Canada for fifteen months. He went overseas attached to the R.A.F. Mo. 166 Centered around Lincolnshire. Made thirty six operational tours over Germany, Promoted to the rank of Flying Officer.

F/O. Carswell was reported home from overseas duty 9/05/45 in the CDN.(P).  

Discharged June 8th, 1945.
