Campbell, J. Murray

 

 

James served in WWI and WWII. The brother of Florence. The husband of Marie Adeline (nee Montgomery). The father of Bruce, Ken, Joanne (Crowley) and Edwin.  

James enlisted in April 1916 with the 215th overseas Battalion at Brantford. He went overseas with this unit and stayed with them until May 1917. He was in active service in France and Belgium from March to July 1918 with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. In July 1918, he was invalided back to England.

He was demobilized in April 1919. In 1920, he joined the Corps of Cadet Instructor and qualified as Lieutenant.

In 1929, he joined the 1st. Division Signals at Chatham as 2nd Lieutenant. He served with this unit until the Chatham Company was discontinued in 1937. By August 1940, he had joined the 2nd Battalion Kent Regiment and served with them till going on active service October 1941 with the Canadian Dental Corps. His named appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown).

It was reported in the CDN 18/07/42(P) that Captain Campbell of Chatham was in charge of the dental clinic at No. 12 BTC – Chatham. He served overseas in England, France, and Belgium. Was promoted to the rank of Major.

Discharged October 2nd, 1945.

James Murray passed away 23 November, 1981 and is buried at Maple Leaf Cemetery – Chatham, ON.
