Private James Burke embarked for overseas April 15th, 1915, and after training at West Sandling, proceeded to France September 14th, 1915. Private Burke served twenty six months in the trenches, taking part in the engagements at St.Eloi, Belgium, 1915; the Somme, France, from September 15th, 1916, to October; in the Lens sector; Vimy Ridge April 9th, 1917; back to Lens from July to October; in the Lens from July to October, going then to Passchendaele, where he was gassed. He was admitted to Hospital in France until November 19th, when he was sent to the Winchester V.A.D.Hospital, England, and one month later to the Canadian Special Hospital at Bushey Park. After five weeks treatment here he was transferred to Bramshott, and then sent to the Buxton Discharge Depot, leaving for Canada April 9th, 1918, and arriving at Chatham April 19th.
